3. The design has been successfully transferred and Hermanson carefully removes the reverse image artwork. He uses a scribe to complete lines if necessary. Next, he places the piece to be engraved into a holding device on his engravers block.

Hermanson’s Workstation

4. Hermanson’s workstation includes a fixed work surface, an engravers block with multiple holding devices, a wide assortment of gravers that fit into his air driven power graver, a hands-free magnification system and diffused electrical lighting. Hermanson uses a modern method for sharpening his gravers.

The Engraving Process

5. After securing the wooden holding device with the metal piece in his engravers block, Hermanson begins the engraving. He starts using a flat bottom graver at the top or bottom portion of each section. For this bright-cut engraving project, he controls the graver to make the cut wider and deeper in the broad section of each line segment. He holds the graver steady, applying forward pressure and rolling the graver to one side while turning the engravers block to create the shape of each line.
