3. He then aligns the two ends and creates a crease at the center. He marks a dark line at the crease to be used as a reference point for centering the lettering layout on the cup. He repeats this procedure for each line of the inscription.

4. Hermanson next scribes horizontal parallel lines on the cup that will serve as guidelines for placement of the engraving. Because he turns the cup to draw the parallel lines, he protects the bottom of the cup with tape to avoid scratches.

5. With the horizontal guidelines in place, Hermanson then draws slanted parallel guidelines to insure a consistent 70 degree slant for the engraved lettering. At this point, Hermanson carefully masks the areas on the cup which will not be engraved with tape to protect it from scratches and tool marks.
