6. Hermanson sprays over his guidelines with a clear coat of artist’s fixative to prevent them from smearing.

7. He marks a center line opposite the handle of the cup. Next, he selects the reference pattern for the top line of inscription and aligns the center mark with the center line on the cup. Then he marks on the cup at each end of the paper pattern so he knows where he will begin the engraving.

Using the guidelines Hermanson draws the design and layout of the
engraving on the cup with a non-permanent pen. He again sprays fixative to
hold the design for engraving.

8. For the engraving, Hermanson uses a flat-bottom and square graver to produce the bright-cut lettering design. He repeats the layout and engraving process for each line of the inscription.

After the inscriptions are engraved, Hermanson cleans up the cup by removing the tape and fixative. Next he does a final inspection and retouches the engraving in areas, if needed. The final step is cleaning.
